Trauma and Dissociation: Theory, Identification and Somatic Methods for Stabilization

September 11, 2026 @ 12:00 pm - April 9, 2027 @ 3:00 pm EDT
$1000

As we sit with a client, we are in the presence of a human organism whose Autonomic Nervous System reflects a complex interplay of personal history, genetic inheritance, attachment patterns, and intergenerational transmission. Assessing a client’s capacity—rather than simply what has happened to them—is the most accurate indicator of whether trauma is present.

Trauma is not defined solely by the event itself, but by the nervous system’s ability (or inability) to process and integrate that experience. When subcortical processes override the system’s capacity for regulated response, the brain and body generate survival-oriented neurological patterns. The brain’s innate negativity-bias further reinforces these patterns, shaping pathways that prioritize one fundamental objective: safety.

About the Course
This eight-module, in-person training will guide participants in identifying both simple and complex trauma presentations and differentiating trauma from attachment wounding. Emphasis will be placed on trauma-informed, non-retraumatizing somatic approaches that promote safety and collaboration.

Participants will:

  • Learn to assess trauma through a neurobiological lens, integrating insights from Polyvagal Theory, the Animal Defense System, and models of dissociation.
  • Gain practical strategies for psychoeducation and client engagement that foster therapeutic alliance and mutual understanding.
  • Engage in experiential somatic practices that deepen awareness of the body’s role in psychotherapy and its efficacy in resolving trauma.
  • Explore the Structural Dissociation model using a somatic parts-based approach to therapeutic work.
  • Balance didactic instruction with hands-on skills practice and case consultation to integrate theory with clinical application.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to recognize autonomic patterns of trauma, work safely and effectively with dissociative processes, and include the body as an active agent of healing in their clinical practice.
