Members may identify themselves in their professional business materials in one of two ways:

Insurance
McFarlan Rowlands offers annual liability insurance which renews every February 1. The cost of your insurance will be prorated from the date of purchase until February 1st of the next year.
Note: CAPT members can choose, upon purchase, to have their insurance activated immediately, or a later start date.
CAPT Membership year
- CAPT membership runs on the calendar year from January 1 to December 31. Applications are accepted throughout the calendar year. Please note that applications and fees submitted for a new membership after October 1 will include the next calendar year.
- Full, Student and Emeritus Memberships must be renewed annually to remain in good standing. The deadline for renewals is December 31 each year. Members are encouraged to retain their payment receipt (if fees are paid online), or a copy of their renewal cheque for tax purposes. CAPT will issue receipts upon request and as necessary.
- As CAPT’s membership term goes from January to December, please note that your membership fee applies to the current year, regardless of the month in which you apply.
- Members are expected to adhere to the CAPT Code of Ethics.
Full membership (graduates of CAPT-recognized institutions)
Graduates of the following training institutes are automatically accepted for membership in CAPT upon application, providing they have also registered with a recognized regulatory college (Click here for the list of recognized colleges.).
- The Centre for Training in Psychotherapy (CTP)
- The Gestalt Institute of Toronto (GIT)
- Ontario Association of Jungian Analysts (OAJA)
- Ontario Psychotherapy & Counseling Program (OPC)
- Canadian Institute for Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy
(formerly Toronto Child Psychoanalytic Program (TCPP)) - Toronto Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis (TICP)
- Toronto Institute for Relational Psychotherapy (TIRP)
- Toronto Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (tps&i)
- Adler Graduate Professional School (AGPS)

Full membership (not a graduate of a CAPT-recognized institution)
This category applies to psychodynamic practitioners who are not graduates of a CAPT recognized institution. Applicants are welcome to apply via the interview process.
The interview process applies to applicants who are:
- graduates of a training institute that is not an Institutional Member of CAPT (including those with international credentials)
- not a graduate of an established training institute, but have extensive training and experience practicing psychodynamically.
The interview process involves:
- Completing an application
- Submitting your current curriculum vitae (CV); any certification(s) associated with your psychotherapy training and/or a university or college degree.
- An interview by a CAPT Board member.

Individual Membership: Fees are currently $160 per year for full membership.

Student membership

Application process: Students will be asked to upload a copy of their diploma or degree, as part of the application process.
Renewing students: CAPT policy also requires that all students who renew their membership provide proof of enrolment for the current year.
Students who are not attending a CAPT approved institution: If you are a student of a training institute other than those listed above, you are eligible for CAPT membership upon graduation, and registration with a regulatory college. Such applicants may be accepted via the interview process.
Important note for graduating students: It is the responsibility of student members to keep CAPT apprised of when they graduate.
When a student graduates from a CAPT-recognized institute, they have 8 months in which to obtain their registration number from CRPO or a recognized regulatory college. (Click here for the list of recognized colleges.)
If, after 8 months, sufficient progress has not been made toward obtaining the registration number, CAPT has the right to suspend membership and/or terminate insurance coverage.
Fees
Fees are $95 per year for student membership.
Once accepted, students may also apply immediately for insurance.

Emeritus membership
If you are an existing CAPT member in good standing who is retiring, or has retired from practice, you may want to transition from Individual to Emeritus membership.
Fees
Emeritus Membership: Fees are currently $60 per year for full membership.

Institutional membership
Institutional Membership is designed for institutions that train students to use psychodynamic methods of psychotherapy. Institutes are eligible if they meet the following criteria:
- have existed long enough to have graduates
- conduct or require a serious academic study of psychodynamic theory
- conduct or require practical preparation and supervision for psychodynamic psychotherapists
- conduct or require training in professional ethics, or have a formal commitment to a code of ethics, and
- have a stable faculty of at least five members

Fees
Institutional Membership carries a one-time fee of $300. Applications are accepted throughout the calendar year.
