As we sit with a client, we are in the presence of a human organism whose Autonomic Nervous System reflects a complex interplay of personal history, genetic inheritance, attachment patterns, and intergenerational transmission. Assessing a client’s capacity—rather than simply what has happened to them—is the most accurate indicator of whether trauma is present.
Trauma is not defined solely by the event itself, but by the nervous system’s ability (or inability) to process and integrate that experience. When subcortical processes override the system’s capacity for regulated response, the brain and body generate survival-oriented neurological patterns. The brain’s innate negativity-bias further reinforces these patterns, shaping pathways that prioritize one fundamental objective: safety.
