SUMMARY:CAPT Seasonal Lecture: My Fatal Mistake. Guilt\, blame and the role of the clinician in a patient suicide: Understanding suicide and the profound impact it has on those bereaved
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Suicide is at the back of our minds in a lot of our work with patients. Given its importance and the fear that it generates\, it is surprising that there is very little known about its nature or aetiology. This talk aims to confront the ‘Truth’ about suicide. What leads someone to take their own life? Can it be prevented? \nThe profound effect the suicide of a patient has on the clinician working with them will be discussed. Knowledge gained about how to process and work with this trauma will also be shared. \n\nPlease note: This Lecture is only open to CAPT members. \nCost: Attendance is free for all CAPT members. \nContinuing education credits:The lecture counts as two hours of professional development. \nThe presentation is approximately 60 minutes\, followed by breakout sessions where members meet in smaller groups to discuss the lecture material and share additional thoughts or clinical experience before returning to the forum for Q+A. \nThe Seasonal Lecture series aims to promote knowledge transfer within the field of psychodynamic therapy\, and provide free professional development to members of CAPT. \nNote: To protect patient confidentiality\, there will be no recording of this presentation in either audio or video format. \n\nPresenter: Dr. Rachel Gibbons\nHost: Julia Glover\n \nBio: Dr. Rachel Gibbons has worked in the NHS for more than 20 years in various psychiatric settings as a consultant psychiatrist and consultant medical psychotherapist. She is a psychoanalyst and group analyst and has been Chair of the Working Group on the Effect of Suicide and Homicide on Psychiatrists for 7 years. \nShe is now Vice-Chair of the Psychotherapy Faculty\, at the Royal College of Psychiatrists. She has worked on suicide and homicide\, and its impact on those bereaved including clinicians over the last 16 years. She is the national expert in the UK on the Impact of Suicide and Homicide on Clinicians and developed the first global guidance for mental health organisations for pastoral care of clinicians following a death by suicide of a patient. \nWebsite: https://www.drrachelgibbons.co.uk/ \n\nClick here to register\n\nPublications: \nGibbons\, R. SUMMARY:ISTDP for Treatment Resistant Depression: a video-based 2 day course
DESCRIPTION:This 2-day course will review the ISTDP metapsychology with a focus on treating treatment-resistance depression using clinical videos. \nDr. Allan Abbass’s 2-day course will use video presentations to show how ISTDP treats treatment-resistant depression. Dr. Abbass will be showing cases of patients with different levels of capacity for emotional processing and Dr. Karen Dinsmore will also be showing a case to highlight the use of ISTDP for treating depression across the psychoneurotic and fragile spectrum. \nOne half or more of patients with depressive disorders fail to reach remission with first line psychotherapy\, like cognitive behavioral therapy\, or psychotropic medications. Frequently this is due to comorbid personality disorders\, high anxiety\, somatic symptoms and other behavioral patterns related to trauma. \nIntensive Short-term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) was specifically built to address these comorbid factors through the building of psychic capacities\, the handling of high resistance and improving tolerance of emotions and anxiety. It has been shown in 2 randomized controlled trials to be highly effective in treating depression and to be superior to psychiatric treatment as usual in people with treatment resistant depression. There are now over 30 published studies showing it to be effective with complex and resistant populations. \nIn this two day workshop we will examine how to psychodiagnose the factors that lead to treatment resistance and how to manage these. \n\nAttendees at this course will learn the following: \n\nHow to do a psychodiagnostic assessment of the depressed patient\nHow to assess thresholds to repression and cognitive perceptual disruption\nHow to build capacity to tolerate anxiety in a graded format\nHow to identify and handle resistances that perpetuate depressed states\nThe process of unlocking the unconscious\nThe process of termination in a time-limited treatment course\n\n\n  \nThis course is suitable for all mental health professionals\, physicians\, nurse practitioners and other health professionals. \nThis training is exclusively for licensed mental health and registered health professionals\, including Psychiatrists\, Psychologists\, Social Workers\, MFTs\, Counselors\, as well as Physicians\, Nurses\, Physical Therapists\, etc. If you are not a mental health or health professional\, you may not attend due to the protection of patient confidentiality. Students and trainees pursuing licensure or registration as a mental health or health professional under supervision are welcome. The course content level is Intermediate level.
