Summary: Psychoanalyst Rhett-Lawson Mohajer discusses his research on the psychoanalytic use of music beyond standard art therapy. He considers the impact of music on the psyche including how improvisation offers a way to integrate the partial egos and part-objects of patients. Additional research looks at the use of musical instruments as a transitional object between internal and external worlds.

Continuing education credits: The lecture counts as two hours of professional development.
The presentation is approximately 60 minutes, followed by breakout sessions where members meet in smaller groups to discuss the lecture material and share additional thoughts or clinical experience before returning to the forum for Q+A.
The Seasonal Lecture series aims to promote knowledge transfer within the field of psychodynamic therapy, and provide free professional development to members of CAPT.

Bio: Rhett-Lawson Mohajer is a CAPT member who earned a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) from California Southern University.
He is a mentor in the Master of Arts Counselling Psychology program at Yorkville University, has sat on the Psychoanalysis and Film panel of the International Society of Applied Psychoanalysis and is an editorial board member of Dialogues in Health.
He is a registered psychotherapist, a registered clinical counsellor, a psychoanalyst, and a musician. His research interests include arts and psychological health, conversion disorder, body image, psychological impacts and dynamics of infidelity, trauma resulting from assault or rape, the role of the unconscious in mental health, dreamwork, and the application of psychoanalytic theories to non-clinical settings.
