September 2020 to June 2021

The Centre for Training in Psychotherapy is offering CAPT members the following courses from September 2020 to June 2021.

Aggression and its place in being human…
Lecturer: Sharon Bedard
Saturdays 10:00 – 1:30

The seminar is not intended as a definitive understanding of aggression so much
as an effort to approach aggression as a complex human response that has
value and not just destructive intent. Read more here

Christopher Bollas – As the Evocative Object
Lecturer: Sharon Bedard
Saturdays 10:00 – 1:30

We will be looking at a number of selected writings by Christopher Bollas. His creative
effort to say something about how he has digested psychodynamic theory from Freud
onwards, and his own original and lively thinking, will further our capacities to think,
reflect and perhaps write. This is the tradition to which you have subscribed, and it is a
living and changing field.

Winnicott
Lecturer: Kristin Casady
Saturdays 2:00 – 5:00

The British pediatrician and psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott (1896-1971) is
appreciated for his monumental contributions to psychoanalytic and
psychodynamic theory and practice. This yearlong concentration is an opportunity
to consider these contributions with greater focus. For this course we will closely
read from important selected papers of Winnicott’s, as well as a sampling of
writings by other thinkers who have generated compelling theoretical expansions of
Winnicott’s ideas (e.g., Ogden, Bollas, Eigen, etc). We will examine common clinical
issues through the lens of Winnicott’s thinking; students will help lead individual
meetings via presentations. Read more here

Transference & Countertransference
Lecturers: Judy Dales & Peter Dales
Saturdays 10:00 – 1:15

It is a given that the twin concepts of transference and countertransference are fundamental to
psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Both of these concepts have undergone an evolution of understanding
throughout the twentieth century, and continue to be developed and refined. A selection of major
psychoanalytic texts, from Freud to the Intersubjectivists is studied to familiarize the student with
these concepts. Read more here
