SUMMARY:CAPT Seasonal Lecture: My Fatal Mistake. Guilt\, blame and the role of the clinician in a patient suicide: Understanding suicide and the profound impact it has on those bereaved
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Suicide is at the back of our minds in a lot of our work with patients. Given its importance and the fear that it generates\, it is surprising that there is very little known about its nature or aetiology. This talk aims to confront the ‘Truth’ about suicide. What leads someone to take their own life? Can it be prevented? \nThe profound effect the suicide of a patient has on the clinician working with them will be discussed. Knowledge gained about how to process and work with this trauma will also be shared. \n\nPlease note: This Lecture is only open to CAPT members. \nCost: Attendance is free for all CAPT members. \nContinuing education credits:The lecture counts as two hours of professional development. \nThe presentation is approximately 60 minutes\, followed by breakout sessions where members meet in smaller groups to discuss the lecture material and share additional thoughts or clinical experience before returning to the forum for Q+A. \nThe Seasonal Lecture series aims to promote knowledge transfer within the field of psychodynamic therapy\, and provide free professional development to members of CAPT. \nNote: To protect patient confidentiality\, there will be no recording of this presentation in either audio or video format. \n\nPresenter: Dr. Rachel Gibbons\nHost: Julia Glover\n \nBio: Dr. Rachel Gibbons has worked in the NHS for more than 20 years in various psychiatric settings as a consultant psychiatrist and consultant medical psychotherapist. She is a psychoanalyst and group analyst and has been Chair of the Working Group on the Effect of Suicide and Homicide on Psychiatrists for 7 years. \nShe is now Vice-Chair of the Psychotherapy Faculty\, at the Royal College of Psychiatrists. She has worked on suicide and homicide\, and its impact on those bereaved including clinicians over the last 16 years. She is the national expert in the UK on the Impact of Suicide and Homicide on Clinicians and developed the first global guidance for mental health organisations for pastoral care of clinicians following a death by suicide of a patient. \nWebsite: https://www.drrachelgibbons.co.uk/ \n\nClick here to register\n\nPublications: \nGibbons\, R. SUMMARY:Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy Externship
DESCRIPTION:February 2–4\, 2026 (In Person) • March 4\, 2026 (Online) \n\nThe Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy® (EFCT) Externship is an immersive 24-hour training designed for therapists seeking to deepen their ability to work effectively with couples to bring about long lasting change. This externship serves as the core training within the couples stream of EFT. \nFacilitated by Dr. Senem Zeytinoglu and Robin Williams Blake\, RP\, this training offers a comprehensive introduction to the EFCT model—emphasizing the science of attachment and a systematic\, experiential approach to helping partners reconnect and heal. \nThis externship is the foundational step in the EFT certification process\, providing the essential knowledge and skills to cultivate secure and resilient bonds in therapy. It lays the groundwork for advanced practice\, helping therapists grow in confidence\, clarity\, and effectiveness in their clinical work with couples. \nYou will learn a clear\, step-by-step framework that helps you know what to do when emotions rise and communication breaks down. You’ll discover how to slow down conflict\, tune in to what’s happening underneath the words\, and guide partners toward sharing their deeper feelings and needs in a way that invites healing and closeness. \nYou’ll gain a practical roadmap! A way of seeing and working with emotion that helps couples move from defensiveness to understanding\, from distance to safety. These are the same in-the-moment skills and larger guiding moves that EFT therapists use to create deep\, lasting change in their clients. \nGrounded in more than 30 years of research\, this approach provides tools that are both structured and deeply human—helping you bring meaningful transformation to the couples\, individuals\, and families you support. \nBut beyond skill and structure\, this training speaks to the heart of the therapist who longs to do good\, deep work—to help couples reach the emotional roots of their pain and rediscover the love that still lives beneath it. \nSenem and Robin create a safe\, engaging learning space where curiosity\, compassion\, and courage meet. You’ll learn to see beyond reactivity to the tender longings that shape every relationship\, and to guide partners through moments of disconnection toward healing and reconnection. \n\n24-Hour Training Schedule\nDay 1: Monday\, February 2\, 2026\nDay 2: Tuesday\, February 3\, 2026\nDay 3: Wednesday\, February 4\, 2026\nTime: 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. EST\nLocation: 20 Grosvenor Street • Central Toronto YMCA\nDay 4 (Online): Monday\, March 4\, 2026 Time: 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. EST \n\nTraining Fee\n• $1100 + HST Early Bird (before Jan 15\, 2026) • $1200 + HST Full Fee\n• $850 + HST Student Fee\n• $900 + HST Group Discount (5+ participants) • Repeat Attendees: 50% off\n• 5 partial scholarships available \n\nFor more information\, contact us at info@tceft.ca or visit www.tceft.ca/all-new-events/. \nAs a member of CAPT and a graduate of the CTP myself\, I am always happy to speak with prospective participants. SUMMARY:“Holding a Mirror Up to Nature:” Perspectives on Human Striving
DESCRIPTION:TICP Presents: A Day With Sandra Buechler\, Ph.D. \n“Holding a Mirror Up to Nature:” Perspectives on Human Striving \nThis workshop is eligible for Continuing Education credits. \n  \nAbout the Presenter\nSandra Buechler\, Ph.D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the William Alanson White Institute. \nShe is the author of Clinical Values: Emotions that Guide Psychoanalytic Treatment\, (Analytic Press\, 2004)\, Making a Difference in Patients’ Lives\, (Routledge\, 2008)\, which won the Gradiva award\, Still Practicing: The Heartaches and Joys of a Clinical Career\, (Routledge\, 2012)\, Understanding and Treating Patients in Clinical Psychoanalysis: Lessons from Literature\, (Routledge\, 2015) Psychoanalytic Reflections: Training and Practice\, (IPBooks\, 2017) Psychoanalytic Approaches to Problems in Living\, (Routledge\, 2019)\, Poetic Dialogues (IPBooks\, 2021) and Erich Fromm: A Contemporary Introduction (Routledge\, 2024). \n  \nMorning Session (2 hours):\n“More Simply Human:” Fundamental Motives According to Erich Fromm and William Shakespeare \nIn his instructions to actors\, Hamlet directs them to “…hold as ‘twere the mirror up to Nature to show Virtue her feature\, Scorn her own image\, and the very age and body of the time his form and pressure” (Hamlet\, Arden\, 2016\, Act III\, Sc.2\, 21-24). \nI will compare the assumptions about human motives implicit in the plays of William Shakespeare and the psychoanalytic and sociological theories of Erich Fromm. \nMore specifically\, I will discuss needs for relatedness\, transcendence\, rootedness\, identity\, and a frame of orientation and devotion. My premise is that creating a “dialogue” between these two astute observers of human behavior will yield interesting ideas for our discussion. \nAfternoon Session (2 hours):\n“More Simply Clinical:” The Clinician’s Hope and Grief \nThis talk takes as its basic assumption that hope and grief are inevitable in the clinician’s professional life. \nI will describe some of my own hopes\, the losses I have incurred\, and their emotional consequences. They run the gamut\, from the deaths of patients\, through sudden terminations\, planned terminations\, and losses of hope\, meaning\, and purpose that\, collectively\, take their toll. \nI believe that\, however the work ends\, the clinician loses the potential “self” she might have become\, had this particular treatment continued. Finally\, I will suggest some sources of resilience for the mourning clinician. \nLearning Objectives\nAfter this presentation\, participants will be able to: \n(1) Describe Fromm’s conception of human motivations\, including needs for relatedness\, transcendence\, rootedness\, identity\, and a frame of orientation and devotion. \n(2) Discuss Shakespeare’s portrayals of human emotional conflicts and their consequences. \n(3) Explain some of the inevitable hopes and sorrows in the clinician’s professional life. \nFees\nGeneral Attendee: $200 (early bird rate $180 prior to September 12) \nTICP Member\, Guest\, Faculty: $175 (early bird rate $160 prior to September 12) \nStudents: $100 (early bird rate $75 prior to September 12) \nRegistration\nClick here to register.
