SUMMARY:ISTDP for Treatment Resistant Depression: a video-based 2 day course
DESCRIPTION:This 2-day course will review the ISTDP metapsychology with a focus on treating treatment-resistance depression using clinical videos. \nDr. Allan Abbass’s 2-day course will use video presentations to show how ISTDP treats treatment-resistant depression. Dr. Abbass will be showing cases of patients with different levels of capacity for emotional processing and Dr. Karen Dinsmore will also be showing a case to highlight the use of ISTDP for treating depression across the psychoneurotic and fragile spectrum. \nOne half or more of patients with depressive disorders fail to reach remission with first line psychotherapy\, like cognitive behavioral therapy\, or psychotropic medications. Frequently this is due to comorbid personality disorders\, high anxiety\, somatic symptoms and other behavioral patterns related to trauma. \nIntensive Short-term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) was specifically built to address these comorbid factors through the building of psychic capacities\, the handling of high resistance and improving tolerance of emotions and anxiety. It has been shown in 2 randomized controlled trials to be highly effective in treating depression and to be superior to psychiatric treatment as usual in people with treatment resistant depression. There are now over 30 published studies showing it to be effective with complex and resistant populations. \nIn this two day workshop we will examine how to psychodiagnose the factors that lead to treatment resistance and how to manage these. \n\nAttendees at this course will learn the following: \n\nHow to do a psychodiagnostic assessment of the depressed patient\nHow to assess thresholds to repression and cognitive perceptual disruption\nHow to build capacity to tolerate anxiety in a graded format\nHow to identify and handle resistances that perpetuate depressed states\nThe process of unlocking the unconscious\nThe process of termination in a time-limited treatment course\n\n\n  \nThis course is suitable for all mental health professionals\, physicians\, nurse practitioners and other health professionals. \nThis training is exclusively for licensed mental health and registered health professionals\, including Psychiatrists\, Psychologists\, Social Workers\, MFTs\, Counselors\, as well as Physicians\, Nurses\, Physical Therapists\, etc. If you are not a mental health or health professional\, you may not attend due to the protection of patient confidentiality. Students and trainees pursuing licensure or registration as a mental health or health professional under supervision are welcome. The course content level is Intermediate level.

SUMMARY:Trauma and Dissociation: Theory\, Identification and Somatic Methods for Stabilization
DESCRIPTION:As we sit with a client\, we are in the presence of a human organism whose Autonomic Nervous System reflects a complex interplay of personal history\, genetic inheritance\, attachment patterns\, and intergenerational transmission. Assessing a client’s capacity—rather than simply what has happened to them—is the most accurate indicator of whether trauma is present. \nTrauma is not defined solely by the event itself\, but by the nervous system’s ability (or inability) to process and integrate that experience. When subcortical processes override the system’s capacity for regulated response\, the brain and body generate survival-oriented neurological patterns. The brain’s innate negativity-bias further reinforces these patterns\, shaping pathways that prioritize one fundamental objective: safety. \nAbout the Course\nThis eight-module\, in-person training will guide participants in identifying both simple and complex trauma presentations and differentiating trauma from attachment wounding. Emphasis will be placed on trauma-informed\, non-retraumatizing somatic approaches that promote safety and collaboration. \nParticipants will: \n\nLearn to assess trauma through a neurobiological lens\, integrating insights from Polyvagal Theory\, the Animal Defense System\, and models of dissociation.\nGain practical strategies for psychoeducation and client engagement that foster therapeutic alliance and mutual understanding.\nEngage in experiential somatic practices that deepen awareness of the body’s role in psychotherapy and its efficacy in resolving trauma.\nExplore the Structural Dissociation model using a somatic parts-based approach to therapeutic work.\nBalance didactic instruction with hands-on skills practice and case consultation to integrate theory with clinical application.\n\nBy the end of the course\, participants will be equipped to recognize autonomic patterns of trauma\, work safely and effectively with dissociative processes\, and include the body as an active agent of healing in their clinical practice. \nDates: \nFridays in 2026: September 11\, October. 23\, November 13\, December 11\nFridays in 2027: January 8\, February 19\, March 12\, April 9 \nTime: 12:00 – 3:00 pm \nCost: $1000 \nLocation: WellSpace Studio\, 982 Bathurst Street\, Toronto\, ON \nCourse Instructor/Supervisor \nJan Ohm is a Registered Psychotherapist\, Certified Sensorimotor Psychotherapist\, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute Approved Consultant and CRPO Approved Supervisor. Jan is the Clinical Director of WellSpace Trauma Therapy Clinic in Toronto\, where Somatic Psychotherapy\, Neurofeedback\, Vagus Nerve Stimulation\, QEEG\, Neuromodulation and Group Psychotherapy are offered for healing of trauma. \n*Participants are required to commit to the full 8 sessions and the total course fee. \nPayable in full\, can also be paid $125 each module. \nKindly respond by email to jan@wellspace.ca with any questions and to register!
