I am an expressive arts therapist based in Toronto.

Expressive Arts Therapy (EXAT) integrates arts exploration, the imagination and creative expression in a process of personal discovery and growth. In EXAT, you are encouraged to explore your thoughts and feelings through a 'low-skill / high-sensitivity' arts-based creative process (your 'artisitc skill level' may be any), while being sensitively and empathically supported. Each session begins with a period of reflection and discussion of any personal life concerns you as a client may have. The process will then move towards the exploration of the discussed topics/themes through visual arts, creative writing, theatre arts, voice, music and/or movement, depending on your artistic curiosities and interests. Together, we reflect on what emerges in the creative exploration and what meaning it might contain for you; or we can simply allow the art process to 'contain' you. You need no previous arts training or experience, and you don't need to consider yourself 'artistic' or 'creative' to benefit from this work. Simply follow your curiosity to explore yourself through artisitic expression. More here.

With Voice Work in Expressive Arts Therapy, we specifically focus on the exploration and development of your voice using breath work, guided imagery and gentle physicalization to develop a wider range of expression. It differs from traditional voice training in how the process explores the emotional and physical sense of embodiment of a wider range of vocal and aesthetic possibilities, while giving attention to the images, thoughts, feelings and insights that may emerge. We spend time reflecting on the vocal exploration process and this in turn becomes an analogous self-exploration. Through developing your physical voice you may experience an increased sense of 'having a voice' and the possibility of allowing your fuller "voice" to emerge. No previous singing, music or arts training is needed to engage in this work - just bring your curiosity to explore your voice and your feelings.

About: I am a graduate of the University of Toronto where I completed an Honours B.A. in Psychoanalytic Thought and English (1997) after completing two years in the Voice Performance Program at the Faculty of Music. I went on to train in and graduate from the Expressive Arts Therapy training program of the International School for Interdisciplinary Studies (ISIS-Canada, now named called The CREATE Institute, Diploma EXAT, 2007). I also have a General Certificate (Voice) from the Roy Hart Theatre (2009). I have studied voice and performance for over 25 years and have worked as a professional singer and performer. I am the secretary on the board of OEATA- The Ontario Expressive Arts Therapy Association. I am actively involved in on-going professional development having completed the year long 'Essentials of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy' certificate program (2015) at the Toronto Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis.
